When I heard about the Underground Railroad as a kid I thought it was an actual underground railroad. I thought to myself, “How could they not know about this? A big train underground? That’s got to be noisy. Plus the tracks and stuff. It doesn’t make any sense!”

To this day whenever I hear underground railroad, I flash on a coal driven steam train chugging along in tunnels all over the South.

an early underground railroad?

I thought the same thing. When they named the Underground Railroad, why didn’t they THINK OF THE CHILDREN?
